What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization, explained for business owners
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website and content so that AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — cite your business when people ask questions you can answer. Where classic SEO competes for a ranked list of blue links, AEO competes for the single answer an assistant reads out.
Why AEO matters now
More buying research starts inside an AI chat every month. When someone asks "best CRM for a 5-person agency" or "plumber near me open Sunday", the assistant composes one answer from sources it trusts. If you're not in that answer, you don't get a click — there is no page two.
Three shifts drive this:
- Zero-click answers: assistants answer directly; users rarely open the underlying sources.
- Entity trust: engines cite businesses they can verify across sources — your site, directories, reviews, structured data.
- Question-shaped retrieval: assistants retrieve passages that directly answer a question, not pages that merely mention keywords.
How AEO differs from SEO
- Unit of competition — SEO: a ranked page. AEO: a quoted passage or entity.
- Query shape — SEO: keywords. AEO: full questions in natural language.
- Win condition — SEO: click-through. AEO: being cited or recommended in the answer.
- Feedback loop — SEO: rankings and traffic. AEO: citation checks across engines.
SEO is not dead — AI engines still lean heavily on pages that rank. AEO builds on healthy SEO; it doesn't replace it.
The five AEO foundations
1. Answer real customer questions, verbatim
Collect the exact questions your customers ask (sales calls, support tickets, forum threads) and publish one clear, direct answer per question. Put the answer in the first two sentences, then elaborate.
2. Use structured data
FAQPage, Organization, Product, LocalBusiness and Article schema (JSON-LD) make your pages machine-legible. Engines cite what they can parse confidently.
3. Be consistent everywhere
Your name, category, pricing, and claims should match across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and review sites. Inconsistency reads as low trust.
4. Publish where engines already look
Reddit, Quora, YouTube and industry communities are heavily retrieved. Genuine, useful participation there earns citations your own domain can't yet.
5. Measure citations, not just rankings
Ask the four major engines your top customer questions monthly. Track when you appear, when competitors do, and which sources the answers cite — then close the gap.
