The 12-point AI visibility checklist: will ChatGPT recommend your business?

To find out whether AI assistants recommend your business, ask them your customers' top questions and check: are you named, are competitors named instead, and which sources does the answer cite? This checklist turns that into a repeatable monthly audit.

The checklist

Ask the engines (15 minutes)

  • 1. List your 10 money questions — the questions a ready-to-buy customer asks ("best X for Y", "X vs Y", "X near me").
  • 2. Ask all four engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews. Same questions, fresh sessions.
  • 3. Record three things per answer — were you named? who was? which sources were cited?
  • 4. Note the citation pattern — engines repeat sources: review sites, Reddit threads, comparison posts. Those are your target placements.

Fix your entity (one afternoon)

  • 5. Organization schema on your homepage: name, logo, sameAs links to every official profile.
  • 6. One consistent description of what you do, everywhere — site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories.
  • 7. A plain-language 'What we do' page — no slogans; the literal answer to "what does this company do, for whom, at what price range."
  • 8. llms.txt — a machine-readable summary of your site for AI crawlers, linked from your root.

Fix your content (ongoing)

  • 9. One page per money question — the answer in the first two sentences, FAQPage schema on the page.
  • 10. Comparison content — honest "you vs alternatives" pages; assistants love citing balanced comparisons.
  • 11. Presence where engines retrieve — helpful answers on Reddit/Quora threads your buyers actually read.
  • 12. Re-test monthly — citation share moves slowly; measure it like you measure rankings.

What good looks like

After 8–12 weeks of consistent work, businesses typically move from "never mentioned" to "mentioned with caveats" on a third of their money questions, and the citation sources shift toward pages they control.

TalkLytics runs points 1–4 automatically every week and drafts the fixes for 5–11 for your approval. The free audit report shows your current score across all four engines.
